The Powell River Academy of Music admits students of all ages who are interested in developing their skills in the music, dance and theater. Students may enter the Academy as beginners or be placed at an advanced level based on their previous experience and training. Faculty and staff will assist students who are entering for the first time find an appropriate instrument, performing ensemble or program of study.
For students entering the Teacher Training (ARCT), Conducting and Audio Engineering programs contact the Academy office to arrange an interview for placement.
Academic Calendar
The Academic year is divided into three parts:
Semester 1: The week after Labor Day until the end of January.
Semester 2: The first week of February until the end of June.
Summer Session
Summer Session dates are announced in May or arranged by the individual instructor.
It is understood that the student will attend for the complete year. It is recommended that students begin their individual lesson and classes in September, however if there is space, students with permission of the instructor may enter after classes or lessons have begun.
Short courses and master classes will have their own start and completion dates.
Academy Programs
All students must complete a registration form at the Academy office before
they begin their private lessons, performing ensembles or classes. At that time
students will pay a registration fee of $15 per student or a $25 per family (if
there is more than one in a family registering) and pay their tuition fees by 10
postdated checks, cash, Visa or Mastercard.

Tuition Fees
Tuition fees vary according to length of lesson, performing ensemble, class, course of study, and faculty pay scale.
Tuition fees for private lessons range from $12 to $18 per 30-minute lesson.
Tuition fees for classes and performing ensembles are available in the Program of Study section.
Tuition fees must be paid in advance by cash, Visa, Mastercard or 10 postdated checks dated from September 1st, 2004 to June 1st, 2005.
Missed Lessons
If missed by a teacher, lessons will be rescheduled or a refund or credit
given. If missed by a student, lessons must still be paid for. If 24 hours
notice is given of an unavoidable absence, teachers may agree to reschedule the
lesson.
Withdrawal Policy
Students are encouraged to complete a full year of studies. In the event
that a student is discontinuing their studies at the Academy, 30 days written
notice is required.
Tuition Tax Receipts
Parents and adult students may request a tuition receipt for income tax
purposes. These are available upon request after February for the previous
calendar year. Revenue Canada stipulates that tuition may be deducted only if
students are 16 years of age or older at December 31. Revenue Canada also
requires that course fees in any calendar year be more than $100 and that the
lessons develop the students skills in an occupation.
Academy Scholarships and Bursaries
Each November, the Academy holds a scholarship competition for students between the ages of 8 - 18 enrolled in lessons at the Academy. Four scholarships are awarded at the junior level (age 8 - 14) and 4 at the senior level (age 15 - 18). The value of each scholarship is $200. Application forms and information regarding the requirements of the competition may be obtained from the office or from your instructor.
Bursaries are awarded to students with financial need enrolled in group classes and performing ensembles. Bursary application forms are available at the office.
Housing
The Academy office will assist out-of-town students in obtaining suitable housing in the community.
