About the program:
The classes are developed to provide children and adults with an opportunity to study art in a fun, supportive and creative environment. Throughout the program students are educated in all aspects of art including developing technical ability, expanding knowledge of historical and contemporary artists, learning from each others work, mastering different materials and choosing artwork for public display. Classes are kept small to foster quality instruction and guest artists are invited to share their expertise for specific classes and workshops.

Schedules:
Children's classes are held Thursday afterschool from 3:30 - 4:45 in three month sessions during the fall and spring. Private or semi-private sessions can be booked throughout the week for individual needs. Workshops and adult classes are held throughout the year. Please register by phone at 414-7020.

We are excited to be hosting David Alexander this year in Powell River! David Alexander will give a painting workshop and an artist talk about his experience with artist residencies on April 27-29 weekend. The workshop will run 10-4 Sat./ Sun at the Powell River Academy of Music ArtReach Studio. Cost is $130 for the weekend workshop. There will also be a free artist talk on Friday April 27 at 7pm at the Academy of Music.
David Alexander’s retrospective show will be touring public galleries in 2013 (currently showing at the Kelowna Art Gallery http://kelownaartgallery.com/exhibitions/2012-2/david-alexander-the-shape-of-place/ and we are pleased to have him visit Powell River this year! He will bring copies of his recently published book for sale and examples of his paintings. Please let me know if you have questions or would like to attend the workshop!

Weekend Painting Workshop: Tools and Techniques of Acrylic Painting with Rick Cepella
November 26/27, 10-4
This workshop is for artists of all skill levels wanting to explore the versatile medium of acrylic paint while stressing solid painting concepts and practices. Learn by painting in a supportive environment where a variety of tools, techniques and examples will be discussed and demonstrated. Landscape painters will find this particularly rewarding. $120
Megan Dulcie Dill (instructor, administration) Megan has been painting and drawing for 15 years and has exhibited in various locations across Canada. She studied art at the University of Toronto, Victoria College of Art, University of Victoria and received a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art in 2003 where she first experienced teaching art to children. She enjoys sharing her love of art and supporting the visual arts in Powell River. Her website is www.mdill.com
Barbara Langmaid (instructor) Barbara Langmaid, a transplant from California, has been painting for over 30 years and has a Bachelor's degree from a small university in Northern California. She has taught children and adults and has worked as a substitute teacher in a one-room schoolhouse as well as a teacher on call in the Powell River school district and has also taught privately to children and adults. She is a board member of the Malaspina Arts Society and is currently a member of a women's mentoring group in Winnepeg (MAWA) and CARFAC. She moved to Powell River in 1993 with her husband and 3 children where she paints at home in her studio and has exhibited in California, Washington, the lower mainland and Powell River. Rick Cepella (guest instructor)
Rick Cepella is a cartoonist, painter and illustrator. His art has appeared in most Canadian newspapers including the Ottawa Citizen, Toronto Star, Vancouver Sun and the National Post. He has been an art instructor for twenty years and has taught at the Kootenay School of Art, Okanagan School of the Arts, Selkirk College, the Ottawa School of Art and others. Rick is an accomplished landscape artist whose bold acrylics convey his love for expressive paint handling and the beauties of the back country.
Katherine McLean (guest instructor)
Katherine McLean is a Powell River artist and educator with over 25 years experience inspiring children through her innovative teaching methods, creative spaces, appreciation of natural materials and keen eye. She is inspired by the Reggio Emilio school of art education for children and currently works in the Powell River school district.
Alfred Muma (guest instructor)
Alfred Muma has been a successful painter, printmaker and educator for over thirty years. After moving to Powell River from the Queen Charlotte Islands he reopened his studio "Among Friends Studio and Gallery" in 1997. He has been involved with many visual arts initiatives including organizing the Powell River Studio Tour and facilitating the Kelly Creek Summer Arts School and has taught all levels of painting, drawing and printmaking to children and adults. He has taught art at Malaspina College, Slocan Valley Art School, Northwest Community College and through the school districts in both Powell River and the Queen Charlottes. Giovanni Spezzacatena (guest instructor) Giovanni (Gian) Spezzacatena is a transplant from Montreal and Seattle, with a strong background in the media arts. He studied at Concordia University, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts degrees in Film and Animation. He has been working in digital and mixed media, and teaching workshops and courses in design, web technologies, traditional and digital animation, and fine arts since 1997. Val Nelson, (Artist in Residence) A former dancer with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Val studied Media Arts at Emily Carr College of Art + Design. In 1988, she graduated with Honors and received the Helen Pitt Award, for which she was included in a group exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery. The following years she collaborated with dance artists, creating award-winning short videos which were screened across North America and Europe, and in 1998 she began painting. Singled out by art critic Christopher Brayshaw at Artropolis 2003, she was a semi-finalist the same year in the Royal Bank Canadian Painting Competition. Val has received Canada Council, BC Arts Council and Vancouver Foundation grants, and she is included in Carte Blanche Vol. 2: Painting, a book on the current state of painting in Canada. David Alexander ( Artist in Residence) studied at the Vancouver Art School and Langara College art dept. and then graduated with a BFA from Notre Dame University. In 1980 he moved to Saskatoon to obtain his Master degree while researching in New York, London and Paris. He has travelled the world to attend his exhibitions, conduct lectures and drawing and painting research. In 2006 Alexander attended the Morris Graves Foundation in California as an invited guest artist in residence and completed a large body of small paintings on wood panels. In 2007 he visited Tokyo and Kyoto and was inspired by the parks and water features. In September 2008 he returned to the high arctic as an invited member aboard a 75 ft. sailing ship that was circumnavigating North America through the North West Passage where he sailed from Tuktoyaktuk, Canada to Point Barrow Alaska. The expedition, Nord 69 consisted of artists, scientists and writers raising cultural and environmental awareness towards global warming. David Alexander's art is in many public, private and corporate collections throughout the world, including The Vancouver Art Gallery, Museum of London, University of Toronto and Concordia University in Montreal, Museum of Art in Iceland, Canadian Embassies in Berlin, Beijing and Krakow. Corporate collections also include works throughout Canadian cities as well as Dubai, Seoul, New York, Mumbai and Nice France and others. Alexander's signature landscapes/waterscapes represent his significant 40 career in painting through a bold palette and gestural application.
David Alexander's solo exhibition 'The Shape of Place' will be presented at the Kelowna Art Gallery from January 14 - March 25, 2012. This exhibition will travel across Canada beginning in 2013 and is accompanied by a beautiful book with texts by six authors on the artist, being published for the Kelowna Art Gallery by McGill-Queen's University Press. The book will be for sale through Bau-Xi Gallery.
